Competent Authors
Writing is integrated throughout all areas of the curriculum and students are taught to spell using the Spelling Mastery program developed by Engelmann and his associates.
A research-validated program for written expression
Our students receive in-depth instruction and extensive practice in a variety of writing genres including book reports, five paragraph essays, research reports, comparison/contrast essays, persuasive writing, descriptive writing, and creative writing. Writing instruction uses the highly successful, research-validated program for teaching written expression developed by Dr. Anita Archer, a nationally recognized expert in effective instruction.
Writing that is fluent and effortless
Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g., print and non-print texts, artifacts, interviews of people) to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and their intended audience. Because our students have many opportunities to practice each genre of writing, the writing process becomes fluent and effortless for them.
