Jazz at Mt. Helix Academy

On May 13, the students of Mt. Helix Academy were treated to an assembly featuring the Rob Thorsen Quartet, with Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, Richard Sellers on drums, Bob Boss on guitar, and Thorsen on bass.

The quartet spoke to the kids about the origins of jazz in New Orleans and about how jazz has evolved over the years to incorporate other styles of music like rock and roll. Of course the quartet did more than just speak as they played amazing music that provided lively examples of the changing nature of jazz.

Our students were very engaged by what they saw and heard and the assembly was quite a success in further exposing Mt. Helix Academy students to the arts and to the joy of music. Thank you Rob Thorsen Quartet for a fabulous visit and learning experience!
