Each year, Mt. Helix Academy’s 2nd grade class has visited various departments of the city of La Mesa, including the police and fire departments, the city library, and the mayor’s office. The visits have allowed our students to learn a bit about how the city’s departments function. After each visit, the students have written letters to the various departments thanking them for their time and information.

After this year’s visit, a couple of La Mesa police officers were so impressed with the nice letters our 2nd graders wrote to them that they decided to drop by Mt. Helix Academy and talk to the 2nd graders. The officers spoke to the students about safety and answered questions the kids had about what their jobs entail.

At Mt. Helix Academy, we teach our students how to be good citizens and the visit by the police officers was particularly valuable because their talk emphasized good citizenship.  The event was also a great lesson in courtesy as it was the very nice thank you letters from the kids that inspired the visit.  Great job 2nd graders!
