Sixth grader, Giovanna Aguilar, learns more about the culture of India and shows off her henna tattoo!
Mt. Helix Academy held its 10th-annual Multicultural Open House on Thursday, March 21. Nearly 500 visitors were in attendance, which is likely to be a record for the event. “This is so impressive” commented a new family.
During the past month, students in each grade have been learning about the traditions and cultures of the country they selected. Art projects, research projects, and presentations demonstrated how much the students learned about each country.
On display were examples of Celtic writing from Ireland, jaguar masks from Mexico, Stonehenge replicas from Great Britain, Faberge Eggs from Russia, dream catchers and Hopi Kachina Dolls, panda kites and dragon collages from China, and tragedy/comedy masks from Greece. Also on display were PowerPoint presentations and travel brochures from India and Italy, and a presentation on historical topics from United States history.
“The staff and students should be proud of their accomplishments,” complimented one parent.
In addition to showcasing their projects, students and their families provided samples of food associated with the country studied. From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., visitors wandered through our “international food court” sampling a variety of delicious items associated with the cultures studied. “Wow! another impressive Multicultural Open House!”
“The food, projects, and social time . . . what a great way to spend the evening!”
